UNIVERSITY OF OKARA …… AT A GLANCE
The University of Education, Okara Sub-campus, was announced on 2nd May 2005 during the visit of Mr. Shoukat Aziz, Ex-Prime Minister of Pakistan, to Okara. The sub-campus of the University of Education Lahore started at Okara in the building of Kalsoomgirls high school, SamadPura Road, Okara, on 28th May 2005. First admissions started in August 2005 in the disciplines of Business Administration, Sciences and Teachers Education Departments. The classes of BS (Hons) Chemistry and Biological Sciences, MA Education, BBA, B.Ed., and M.Ed., started in October 2005. The classes of M.Phil. Botany, Zoology, Education and Mathematics and PhD in Education started later on. We plan commencement of PhD, in Zoology and Botany programmes in 2018.
Approximately 1200 acres of land was identified at RenalaKhurd, District Okara, to be developed as sub-campus of the University of Education Okara. On April 23, 2006, 204 acres of land was allocated for sub-campus of University of Education Lahore. In the 2nd phase, 1037 acres of land was proposed for the main campus. The possession of the land proposed in the second phase could not be taken as yet.
An amount of five billion rupees were earmarked by the Higher Education Commission, Islamabad, for development of this main-campus of which 1st installment of 470 million was released in 2006. One academic block (double story), student service center (16,000 sq. ft.) and a boy’s hostel (50 seats) were constructed in the 1st phase. One medium-size library (17,000 sq. ft.), roads with tuff tile and some vehicles (6 Buses, 1 Suzuki Cultus 1000cc, 1 Toyota Hiace, 1 Tractor Massi) were provided to the sub-campus.
ESTABLISHMENT OF UNIVERSITY OF OKARA
The Government of Punjab upgraded the sub-campus of University of Education Lahore at Okara as an independent full-fledged general university with the name of University of Okara on April 1, 2016. Presently 3,800 students are enrolled at University with faculty strength of 42 in 8 disciplines (Zoology, Botany, Chemistry, Mathematics, IT, English, Business, and Education) leading to BS, (8 programmes), M.Sc. (5), M.Phil. (4), and (1) PhD degree programmes with a plan of starting PhD in 2 other programmes (Zoology and Botany) from 2018. Some 100+ visiting faculty members are also associated with the university, and training students in their fields of specializations.
